Membership recruitment week is October 14-18, 2019. Please reach out to the students throughout your school to recruit new members. Ask your current members to help with recruitment; they can easily ask their friends to join. Be proud of your chapter and spread the word about your business education classes. Active members in BPA bring a great deal of recognition to the business education curriculum. Take action and have your students engage in some membership recruitment activities!

What’s your vision for 2020? Make plans to find out what’s in store for business education in Michigan. This year’s Michigan Business Education Association Annual Convention will be held in Mt. Pleasant, MI. There is still time to register and reserve your hotel room. The conference registration and hotel room rate deadlines are both on October 18, 2019.

Bring a friend…the more the merrier! The conference registration information and conference agenda is posted online at www.mbea-online.org.

Free certification offer for Michigan Educators!

In today's workplace, soft skills are pivotal for success. Developing soft skills in the workplace can give candidates a big edge on the competition. With communication skills consistently being one of the top skills desired by employers in new hires, Certiport researched widely-acknowledged professional business communication principles and created the Communication Skills for Business (CSB) certification to validate that students have an understanding of how to communicate well in a professional environment.

While the key skill being measured is communication, the nature of this exam will also help students with:

  • Critical Thinking - which will happen as they think through how to effectively communicate
  • Collaboration - which will stem from effectively communicating with others
  • Creativity - which is required to present appealing communications

Sound good? Want to know more…how about try it for free in your classroom! From now until October 31, 2019 all instructors who contact Eric Gilbert, Certiport Regional Manager, will receive thirty (30) Communication Skills for Business (CSB) certification vouchers. Vouchers will be distributed at the beginning of November. All free CSB vouchers provided in this offer will be valid for 60 days.

In order to redeem the free CSB vouchers instructors must have an active Certiport authorized test center with the Compass test engine installed. Certiport does not charge to setup a Certiport authorized test center or install the Compass test engine. To get started please go to www.certiport.com/go.

To receive your thirty free vouchers contact Eric Gilbert, Certiport Regional Manager, at 801-772-3257 or eric.gilbert@pearson.com and identify that you're from Michigan and simply ask for your free CSB certification vouchers. Contact Eric if you have any questions or need assistance.

The Michigan Guidelines Supplement for secondary chapters is now available for download at www.michiganbpa.org/documents. All secondary chapter advisors should download this important document. The document contains information regarding modifications to some of the competitive events, how many chapter members may enter the same event, preliminary SLC information, and additional award information.

Chapters are responsible for their own parking during the fall leadership conference. Long-term/daily bus parking is NOT allowed on Michigan Avenue in front of the Lansing Center. Buses may park there for loading and unloading only. Please obtain your bus driver’s cell phone number and instruct your driver to drop you off in the morning and then you can call or text your driver when you’re ready to be picked up. Buses may park off-site at Frandor Shopping Center (2.3 miles). A map and directions from the Lansing Center to Frandor Shopping Center is available online at https://goo.gl/maps/3hMbBYFvVYr.

Parking on site is available in the parking lot underneath the Lansing Center for $7.00 per entry, per day. You must be prepared to pay upon entering the lot.

In addition, parking is available in the parking structure next to the Radisson Hotel on N. Grand Avenue. This parking structure, which has a different parking rate, is connected to the Lansing Center via skywalk.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is NOT provided on site at the Lansing Center during the fall conference on Friday. Attendees may purchase Wi-Fi by logging on to the Lansing Center Wi-Fi, then follow instructions to establish an account and pay a $10 fee per device, per day.

All participants (students and advisors) will receive meal tickets based upon the meals ordered when registering for the fall conference. Please make sure you pay close attention to the meals you have ordered. If there are any mistakes in your registration, please notify State Administrative Assistant Lillia Sheline at info@michiganbpa.org no later than September 30, 2019.

NOTE: Please note that nut free allergies will be addressed. However, just like any kitchen, the kitchen cannot guarantee food being prepared in a nut-free environment. As needed, please have students bring an EpiPen if they have one.
